The “date-a-state” tour

In 1989, after almost a decade in Brooklyn, I needed to recalibrate. It was my 30th year. I was happy working as a Scenic Artist, but my social life had stalled. I bought a 1982 pale yellow Honda Civic wagon, put a mattress in the back and headed out on 4 month road trip. I prophetically named my car the Pequod. The idea was that I would keep all national boundaries and large bodies of water on my left. I had the names of mutual friends all around the country and I set off on what I called “my date-a-state” tour. My cheeky catchphrase: “There is nothing sexier than a woman leaving town.” To protect my belongings, I made the “snake box.” I fabricated a long box for the back of the wagon out of bright blue plastic sheeting, and stenciled “Albuquerque Venom Collection Agency: Caution Poisonous Snakes” in bright orange. No one broke into my car. For more details about this momentous trip and how I imported my husband, read my old school newsletter - “News from A Broad” below.
I would write it, go to a Kinkos and make 30 photocopies, address 30 envelopes and mail them. I am the OG.
